Friends with COOL Stuff

As a gunwriter I get to look at and shoot a lot of cool guns. Generally, these are guns you can buy from about any dealer. When you have good friends with deep pockets that really like guns they sometimes have REALLY cool guns you can play with. Like today; a friend dropped by with two double rifles. One was a Heym double in .270 Winchester. Ah, this was cool. A light and fast handling double that was perfectly regulated!

But the REALLY cool rifle was an older Merkel double with three barrel sets; 8mm Mauser X 2, 16 gauge X 2 and a 16 ga. and 5.6X50mm. This rifle with this three barrel set could be used for 99% of the hunting anyone would ever do. The double 8mm barrels would take care of big game, the double 16s all the wing shooting and the 16 and 5.6 would be a great turkey or predator combination. Oh, and as an added bonus, both rifle barrels had quick detach mounts!

Poor hillbillies like me could never afford a combination like this – even used. But, it sure is nice when a buddy drops by with a gun like this and boxes of ammo!
