It starts just before Halloween and continues through the end of the year. Its the argument about when the whitetail rut starts, is at its peak and ends. This MAP over at Field & Stream is fueled by eye-witness reports in various areas. It may not be a true reflection of the rut but it is kinda neat.
Most hypothesize that the peak of the rut occurs a week after the second full moon following the autumnal equinox. Sounds technical enough to be at least partially right – to many folks, as long as something sounds technical its true – but who knows. I did this calculation for you and right now is time!
Here in West Virginia I typically use the hillbilly method to judge the peak of the rut. We have the highest deer/auto collision rate of any state and guess when it gets the worst? During the rut.
I saw my first road kill buck yesterday.
